Washer Not Draining

You open the lid to find your clothes floating in grey water. This is arguably the most common washing machine failure we see.

• Clogged drain pump filter (coins, socks, hair)
• Failed drain pump motor
• Kinked or obstructed drain hose
• Lid switch failure (some top loaders won’t drain if they think the lid is open)
• Control board relay failure

How we diagnose it: We listen to the pump motor for humming (jammed) or silence (failed). We manually inspect the drain path and filter for foreign objects.

What you can do right now: If you have a front loader with an access door at the bottom, check the clean-out filter. Be prepared for water to rush out.

Dryer Not Heating

The drum spins, the lights come on, but the clothes stay cold and wet. This defeats the purpose of the machine.

• Burnt out heating element (electric)
• Failed igniter or gas valve coils (gas)
• Blown thermal fuse
• Defective thermostat or thermistor
• Timer or control board failure

How we diagnose it: We test the continuity of the heating element and safety fuses. For gas units, we observe the ignition sequence to see if the igniter glows and the gas valve opens.

What you can do right now: For electric dryers, check your circuit breaker. A dryer can still spin on 120 volts but requires 240 volts to heat. If one leg of the breaker trips, it will spin but not heat.

Washer Leaking Water

Puddles on the laundry room floor can cause massive damage to subfloors and ceilings if located on a second floor.

• Torn door boot seal (front loaders)
• Loose or cracked drain hose
• Leaking water inlet valve
• Worn tub seal or center post gasket
• Cracked drain pump housing

How we diagnose it: We run a cycle and visually inspect the internal components for drips. We often use paper towels around key areas to detect the source of moisture.

What you can do right now: Check the rubber hoses behind the washer. If they are bulging or wet, turn off the water supply taps on the wall immediately.

Dryer Taking Too Long to Dry

If you have to run the dryer two or three times to dry a single load, you are wasting energy and putting immense strain on the machine.

• Restricted dryer vent (lint buildup in the wall)
• Weak gas valve coils opening intermittently
• Failed moisture sensor strips
• Blower wheel clogged with lint

How we diagnose it: We measure the airflow at the external vent hood. We also check the temperature cycling of the heating element to ensure it stays on long enough.

What you can do right now: Go outside and feel the airflow coming out of your dryer vent cap while the machine is running. If it is weak, your home’s ductwork likely needs cleaning.

Washer Not Spinning

The clothes come out soaking wet and heavy. The machine might agitate but refuses to enter the high-speed spin cycle.

• Broken drive belt
• Failed lid switch or door lock
• Worn motor coupling or clutch
• Defective motor control board
• Unbalanced load sensor tripping

How we diagnose it: We check the error codes for balance issues. We inspect the mechanical drive system for broken couplers or stretched belts.

What you can do right now: Try rearranging the wet clothes to ensure they are evenly distributed. A heavy blanket on one side can prevent the machine from spinning.

Loud Noises (Banging, Squealing, Rumbling)

Laundry machines are noisy, but metallic banging or high-pitched squealing indicates a mechanical failure.

• Worn drum rollers or axles (dryer)
• Failed tub bearings (washer sounds like a jet engine)
• Loose counterweights
• Idler pulley failure
• Object trapped between the tubs

How we diagnose it: The type of sound tells the story. A rhythmic thump is usually rollers; a roar is bearings. We isolate the component by manually rotating the drum.

What you can do right now: Check pockets for loose change or screws. If the washer sounds like a jet taking off, the bearings are likely shot, which is a major repair.

Dryer Won’t Start

You press the start button and hear nothing, or perhaps just a click.

• Broken door switch (the unit thinks the door is open)
• Blown thermal fuse (safety lockout)
• Broken start switch or knob
• Failed drive motor

How we diagnose it: We test the door switch for continuity. A blown thermal fuse is a very common cause, usually resulting from a clogged vent causing overheating.

What you can do right now: Check the door latch to ensure it clicks firmly. Check your breaker panel.

Washer Smells Like Mildew

This is a frequent complaint with front-loading washers. The smell can transfer to your clean clothes.

• Mold growth behind the door boot seal
• Soap scum buildup in the outer tub
• Clogged drain filter holding stagnant water
• Using too much detergent

How we diagnose it: We inspect the gasket folds and the dispenser drawer for black mold. We check for proper drainage.

What you can do right now: Leave the washer door open between cycles to let it dry out. Run a “Clean Washer” cycle with a specialized tablet or bleach.
